- Nprn: 8923
- Summary: Bethel Methodist Chapel was first built in 1823 and rebuilt three times, in 1836, 1856 and 1867. The 1856 chapel was designed by architect Evan Harris of Merthyr and the third, in 1867, by Thomas Thomas of Landore. Bethel had further alterations/additions made in 1871, 1893 & 1903 but was then demolished during the 1960's. A new chapel was built in 1975, in the late twentieth century style with a gable-entry and L-shaped plan. Unfortunatly this new building was defective and became unusable, forcing the congregation in 1996 to merge with Nebo (NPRN 8889). By 2004 Bethel had been converted for residential use.
RCAHMW, April 2010 - Description: Chapel built 1823 & rebuilt 1836 and 1856 to the design of Rev Evan Harris of Merthyr. Rebuilt/modified again 1867 to the design of Thomas Thomas of Landore with further alterations/additions 1871, 1893 & 1903. Built in the Simple Round-Headed andSub-Classical style, gable entry type. Demolished late 1960s & new chapel built 1974 (brick with steel shutters). Later abandoned & congregation merged 1996 with Nebo (NPRN 8889). Status (2004): Converted to Dwelling
After demolition in the 1960s a New Bethel Chapel was opened on 14/01/1975. It was a modern 'L' shaped building with split level roof, built at the top of the Merthyr Road on the site of Maesydderwen. However the new building was defective and when it became unusable the congregation joined with and attended at Nebo. Inf. Hello
My great great grandparents were married in Kinnerton Chapel in Old Radnor on 21st May1850. I have been searching for information on the Chapel, so was pleased to find this website. I have now located it on Google Street View – looks like someone is ‘doing it up’ to live in: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.2612635,-3.1095337,3a,90y,232.95h,84.26t/data=!3m9!1e1!3m7!1s-8DWPORkq2RFVNXBLde_-g!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!9m2!1b1!2i53?hl=en-GB
The marriage record of my ancestors Abraham Bounds and Elizabeth Williams is attached. I hope it is of interest.
All the best
Saira
