- Summary: Carmel Baptist Chapel was built in 1842, rebuilt in 1860 and rebuilt again in 1900. The present chapel, dated 1900, is built in the Simple Round-Headed and Sub-Classical style of the short-wall entry type.
RCAHMW, March 2010 - Description: Church [chapel] formed 1822 & built 1842 (1848); rebuilt/modified 1860 & 1900/1. Building style is simple round-headed and Sub-Classical style, short-wall entry type. Status (1999): in chapel use.
Single storey Baptist chapel with hipped slate roof, red ceramic ridge tiles and 2 metal ventilation stacks on central ridge. Pebble-dashed elevations with stressed cement render details. Chapel orientated east-west.
West elevation - central porch with single pitch lean-to roof with double T&G doors with rectangular 2 paned overlight, architrave. Porch flanked by slightly projecting vestibule bays with hipped slate roofs with cement ridges and stylised leaf topped terracotta finial at apex of hip. Two-paned fixed light rectangular window to front of each bay. Lintel/cornice and sill band returned to sides of porch. At base of right bay is large rectangular slate tablet with inscription, "CARMEL / BAPTIST CHAPEL / 1860". At the base of right bay small slate tablet with inscription, "CARMEL BAPTIST / 'S / CHAPEL / 1842". To either side of porch in main front is a single 8-paned sash window with rounded leaded tympanum and projecting cement sills. Rounded hoodmoulds with acanthus decorated stops and rock-rustified keystones. Rendered Inscription "CARMEL 1900" above central porch, flanked by 2 round windows, hoodmoulds without keystones. Coloured leaded glass decorated with 6 pointed lobed flower.
North and south side elevations - cornice band, stressed cement rendered pilaster strips at angles, plain stressed cornice and sill bands, and 4 round headed windows, details as at front. Projecting plinth returned from front.
Interior: porch - panelled T&G ceiling with incised decorated cornice plaster walls with vertical T&G below roll moulded dado, concrete floor. Centrally placed rectangular internal (6 paned fixed light) window through west wall of chapel. 2 flanking panelled doors with moulded architraves give access to main body of chapel.
Main interior - recessed rectangular T&G panels, incised cornice, 2 central plaster panels having ornate roundels with recessed ventilation grills. Plaster cove and moulded cornice with dentil mouldings interrupted by round windows through west wall and round headed windows to the north and south. Plaster walls with roll moulded dado and vertical T&G to board floor. Black stencilled foliated undulate frieze along top of dado. Paraffin lamp with circular mirror sconce to left of both doors from porch. All window openings have slightly splayed reveals and sloping rendered sills. Sill vents. Beaded chamfer to reveals of windows and doors. Two aisles. Benches have T&G panelled backs and chamfered bench ends. Straight central divider to central block. Cupboard with T&G panelled door to either side of set fawr. Bracket mounts for paraffin lamps above.
Set fawr - rectangular in plan. Moulded top rail. Turned balustrade with acorn finials to turned corner posts. Projecting moulded bottom rail. Central reading desk with single door T&G cupboard below. Fixed internal slatted seating.
Rectangular table with turned legs before pulpit, to either side are ornately carved eisteddfod chairs; the one to the left dated 1872, Eisteddfod Cefnmawr, to the right - Eisteddfod Trefnant, 1926. Plain ladder back chair to north of left pulpit stair. 2 brass collection plates inscribed to the memory of Mari Thomas, "Arallt", 1949.
Pulpit - moulded top rail, solid projecting panelled (bolection moulding) front with canted sides, bowed wings with turned balustrade at top of stairs to either side. T&G to plinth. Projecting central desk. Stairs with curved bannister, turned balustrades and newel posts with acorn finials. Minister's bench set within reredos recess.
Reredos - Segmental arch with stressed keystone, supported on plain plaster corinthian style pilasters. Floral decoration to archivolt.
Act of Parliament clock "O.H. ROBERTS AMLWCH".
Chapel forcourt fronted by low pebble-dashed wall with slate capping surmounted by railings; uprights with stylised pointed finials, main verticals have ball topped fluted conical finials. Cast Iron gate posts with pointed finials and blind traceried sides - cinquefoil pointed arch with trefoiled spandrels. Tudor rose within roundel at base. Double gates of similar style as railings.
