- Summary: Adwy'r Clawdd Methodist Chapel was built in 1750, rebuilt in 1815 and in 1860. The chapel was then destroyed by fire in 1884 and rebuilt for a final time in 1885, in the Vernacular style with a long-wall entry plan, by architect Richard Owen of Liverpool. A chapel house and school were added in 1888. By 2003 Adwy'r Clawdd had been demolished.
RCAHMW, November 2009 - Description: Cause begun 1748 & chapel built 1750. Enlarged/rebuilt ca. 1815 & 1860, destroyed by fire 1884. Rebuilt 1885 (cost £1500), with chapel house & school added 1888. Status (2003): demolished.
In the C19 new causes were started at Harwood (Brymbo), Bersham, The Ffrith and Pentre'r cwm brithiau.
On 10/02/1884, the Adwy chapel accidentally burnt down. The place was completely gutted, the walls alone standing, and these, being considered unsafe, were pulled down within four feet of the ground, the present chapel having therefore the same dimensions as the old. Memorial stones were laid on 31/08/1885 and 01/09/1885 and the opening ceremony took place on Monday, 1st September, following. The Adwy chapel has been directly or indirectly, the mother of most of the Calvinistic Methodist causes in this neighbourhood (extract and info. Hello
My great great grandparents were married in Kinnerton Chapel in Old Radnor on 21st May1850. I have been searching for information on the Chapel, so was pleased to find this website. I have now located it on Google Street View – looks like someone is ‘doing it up’ to live in: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.2612635,-3.1095337,3a,90y,232.95h,84.26t/data=!3m9!1e1!3m7!1s-8DWPORkq2RFVNXBLde_-g!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!9m2!1b1!2i53?hl=en-GB
The marriage record of my ancestors Abraham Bounds and Elizabeth Williams is attached. I hope it is of interest.
All the best
Saira
