- Summary: The cause in Llanilar started in 1788 and Carmel Methodist Chapel was built in 1796. The chapel was subsequently rebuilt in 1814, 1824 and 1879, This later chapel was designed by the architect Richard Owen at a cost of £950.
The current chapel is stone built in the Simple Round-Headed style with a gable entry plan. The facade faces into the road with a small enclosed area to the front. The central, segmentally-headed doorway is flanked by two flat-headed sash windows, while there is a triple window above of three round-headed lights and two further windows to the outer bays. There is a series of three datestone above the door with the inscriptions "Adeiladwyd 1879/Carmel/Erected 1879", and a small plaque in the pediment "Methodistiaid Calfinaidd".
Internally there are pitch pine panelled pews in three blocks, and a large three-sided sedd fawr with a reading desk in the centre. The pulpit platform is reached by steps with turned balusters, and has an ornate front with contrasted wood colours. The pulpit itself has pireced fretwork decoration , and behind it is a big plaster arch. There is a three sided gallery, at the rear of which is a small organ in a Gothic case. The plaster ceiling has a central roundel with an ornate floral and acanthus rose, from which come diagonal ribs.
In 1905 (Royal Commission on the Church of England and other Religious Bodies in Wales and Monmouthshire) there were 530 sittings in the chapel and 200 in the Sunday school,which was valued at £1,650. - Description: Cause 1788; Built 1796, modified, altered or rebuilt 1814, 1824, 1879. My great great grandparents were married in Kinnerton Chapel in Old Radnor on 21st May1850. I have been searching for information on the Chapel, so was pleased to find this website.
