- Summary: the cause here was started by Thomas Griffiths, Hawen. In 1832 a Sunday school was started in an empty house belonging to josuah Jone, Blaentir and in the following year he gave them his own house to use. By 1833 this had become too small so he adapted a barn for the purpose. Land was leased for the building of a chapel by Mr Davies, Pantygwenith, who also offered stone from his quarry. A lease of 79 years at 5s a year was given.
Bryngwenith Welsh Independent Chapel was built in 1834 at a size of 30 by 20ft with a gallery, at a cost of £80. It was later enlarged in 1854 bringing the seating to 200, and rebuilt in 1883/4. It is in the sub-Classical style, built from rubble stone with rusticated quoins and stone voussoirs, below a pitched slate roof with bracketed eaves. The gable elevation of the chapel has a large central slightly recessed arch, in which there is a round-headed entrance below three narrow round-headed windows, the central being slightly taller than the outer two, with an inscribed stone above. The outer bays of the gable elevation each has a tall round-headed window, and in the apex of the gable there is a round-headed ventilation point.
Inside the chapel there is a three-sided raked gallery with panelled front mounted upon cast iron columns with foliated capitals. Below there are four blocks of box pews, all facing the puplit and set fawr, which have timber balustrades and ornate carved panels.
In 1867 the church decided to have a cemetery, and aquired a large piece of land on the other side of the road to the chapel, on a lease of 999 years for 1s a year, from Sir T D Lloyd, Bronwydd.
In 1905 (Royal Commission on the Church of England and other Religious Bodies in Wales and Monmouthshire) there were 350 sittings in the chapel which was valued at £950.

Hello
My great great grandparents were married in Kinnerton Chapel in Old Radnor on 21st May1850. I have been searching for information on the Chapel, so was pleased to find this website. I have now located it on Google Street View – looks like someone is ‘doing it up’ to live in: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.2612635,-3.1095337,3a,90y,232.95h,84.26t/data=!3m9!1e1!3m7!1s-8DWPORkq2RFVNXBLde_-g!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!9m2!1b1!2i53?hl=en-GB
The marriage record of my ancestors Abraham Bounds and Elizabeth Williams is attached. I hope it is of interest.
All the best
Saira
