Capel Newsletter, 6/2004 - Description: The chapel was built in1872 to serve the Calvinistic Methodist College extant at Trefecca 1842-1906, and replaced the former chapel that had occupied the SE wing. Built as a memorial to Howell Harris, in Gothic style, gable entry type, to the design of R G Thomas. Status (2001): Disused.
The Howell Harris Memorial chapel replaces part of the SE. wing at Coleg Trefeca and was built in 1872 to serve the Calvinistic Methodist Theological College (1842-1906). The Theological College had succeeded the idealistic Methodist community founded by Howell Harris and his followers in 1752, inspired by the Moravian's settlement at Fulneck, Yorkshire and with buildings in a Strawberry Hill Gothick style (Haslam, Buildings of Powys). The main C18 Gothick building, first listed in 1961, was included as a Grade II* item in the Cadw resurvey of the Community of Talgarth as at 14/8/1995 (list of buildings of special architectural or historic interest for the District of Brecknock: list no 68, resurvey E). On the evidence of the Cadw listing map and list description (NMR library), the memorial chapel appears to be excluded from the listing. Haslam (Buildings of Wales: powys (1979) states that the chapel in 1970s housed "an excellent exhibition, together with relics of the Harris circle". Hello
My great great grandparents were married in Kinnerton Chapel in Old Radnor on 21st May1850. I have been searching for information on the Chapel, so was pleased to find this website. I have now located it on Google Street View – looks like someone is ‘doing it up’ to live in: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.2612635,-3.1095337,3a,90y,232.95h,84.26t/data=!3m9!1e1!3m7!1s-8DWPORkq2RFVNXBLde_-g!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!9m2!1b1!2i53?hl=en-GB
The marriage record of my ancestors Abraham Bounds and Elizabeth Williams is attached. I hope it is of interest.
All the best
Saira
