- Summary: Brecon Church was built in 1866, to the design of Reading architect W F Poulton. Built in the Gothic style, gable entry type, the chapel is highly decorative with stone walls and a slate roof with alternating grey and purple bands. . A prominent feature of this Chapel is the integral tower which rises as an octagonal spire. Inside panels of opaque gothic glass windows separate the hallway from the main body of chapel.
RCAHMW, 15 May 2009. - Description: The chapel was built in 1866, designed in Gothic style by W F Poulton of Reading. In 1980 the church was joined by the congregation from Bethel Chapel (NPRN:6005). Building is listed Grade 2. Built in the Gothic style, gable entry type. A prominent feature of this Chapel is the integral tower. See Site Files [Ecclesiastical] for photos. Highly decorative Gothic revival chapel occupying town position. Chapel and schoolroom form 'L'plan with two gable ended slate roofs. Built in 1866 for a breakaway group from Bethel Chapel, cost 2,cj300, the Watton opened for worship 28/01/94. Designed by W.F.Poulton.
Main façade - SW gable end - highly decorative Gothic gabling with pinnacle on N side, tower and steeple S side. Smaller pinnacle N side of entrance porch gable end. Tower on S side incorporates semi-spiral staircase to gallery.
All apertures are pointed arched in Gothic style.
On either side of main façade, two steps lead up to two main entrance doorways framing two sets of heavy wooden doors, vertically t & g, with wrought iron fittings, set in dressed stone archways with dripstones.
Single long central window, four panelled lancets with cusped heads.
Small single paned gothic window above.
All windows have pink margin lights. Windows set in stone mouldings with dripstones.
NE rear elevation - lateral wall of schoolroom supported by buttresses.
NW elevation - buttressed with five lancet windows.
SE elevation - schoolroom annex (PRN 19833) to east. Four buttresses, five lancet windows and Gothic staircase tower. Single t & g schoolroom door set in stone rebate arch. New schoolroom annex built onto original schoolroom gable end.
Interior. Main entrance doors lead into two small interior porches, quarry tiled floors. S porch slightly larger to accommodate gallery stairs. Two double doors lead in from each porch to main hallway. Front wall stripped of plaster due to dampness has revealed original stonework. Panels of opaque glass gothic windows separate hallway from main body of chapel. Two pairs of panelled doors with similar opaque glass to either side of screen lead into main body of chapel.
Chapel interior - plastered walls, dado panelling with 'clover' frieze all round. T & g floor, carpetted main areas.
Plastered ceiling with six visible arch braced roof trusses.
All apertures set in plain archways.
Bench pews with t & g backs, numbered, name plates.
Estimated seating 450.
Semi-octagonal stone pulpit with gothic niches. Wooden lectern
Organ, original, has exposed pipes and echoes clover motifs. Located behind pulpit.
Pulpit and communion area on raised platform. Loose seating, additional modern furniture and blackwood piano.
Original communion table from Bethel Chapel. Brass plaque to L of pulpit area commemorates amalgamation of Bethel & Watton Chapels 6/7/80 to form Brecon Presbyterian Church.
Gallery - supported by two wooden 'Y' columns to front. Straight gallery mainly above porch area. Latticed t & g panelled front with central integral clock.
Pews - straight benches, single rail at back, raised on five tiers.
Single gothic door to left of pulpit area leads into small minister's room. Square plan, fireplace blocked up, single lancet window to NW.
Additional door leads into kitchen area. Two lancet windows and single doorway to NW wall.
Schoolroom - rectangular plan to rear of chapel body. Plastered walls and ceiling. Exposed principle rafters. Four pairs of lancet windows with pink margin lights to SW, one pair to NE wall. Chimney breast SW wall.
New schoolroom annex built 1980s on SE wall of old schoolroom.
Highly decorative wrought iron railings above dressed stone walls and two pairs of gates front The Watton. Stone slabbed entrance paths with grassed borders. Adjoining properties form boundaries on other sides.

My great great grandparents were married in Kinnerton Chapel in Old Radnor on 21st May1850. I have been searching for information on the Chapel, so was pleased to find this website.
