- Summary: Hope Baptist Chapel was first built in 1902 but this building became the schoolroom when a new chapel was errected in 1906. The 1906 chapel was built in the the Later Vernacular and Lombardic/Italian style, with a long-wall entry plan and two storeys.
In 2003 the congregation moved back to the original chapel and the second chapel was later demolished.
RCAHMW, September 2010 - Description: Chapel built 1901, in a simple Romanesque style. Gable entry plan. The sunday school was originally a chapel, information from MGCS, (PI 28/10/1997).
"In 1898 it was decided an English speaking church was needed in Gelli, and her name would be "Hope".
A group of beleivers began to gather, 1st in local homes, then in the local school, Ton Infants, from Sunday 6th March. Great numbers joined and Baptisms were many, these took place at Siloam Welsh Chapel, Gelli - the nearest baptistry at the time. A new building (Hope) was built and consecrated on 25th May 1902, this of course became to small when Revival swept through Wales. So, foundations stones for a bigger church were laid on 13th November 1905 and the new chapel was consecrated on 8th July 1906. the 1st minister, Rev Daniel Davies, was called in 1906 and he stayed until 1909. the first building now served as a Sunday School, Youth Club, Band of Hope, and later for Mothers and Toddlers and Young People's Fellowship. Hope also had a Drama Group, very successful during Drama Competitions and Drama Weeks, so popular in the past.
The new chapel grew from strength to strength. Although we have not had a resident minister since 1969, our ministry is still of high standard where both ordained, and lay men and women serve us.
We still have a Sunday School, week nights prayer meetings, Women's League and Young People's Fellowship.
Our numbers are much smaller in 2004.
In 2003 the diacerate decided financially Hope could not continue. How grateful we are that the original smaller building was still ours. After refurbishing, our church has moved back to the chapel built in 1902 and we have settled well and enjoy fellowship with each other and with the God that inspired that fiorst small group, and has sustained them and us over 100 years."
Account from the Hope Chapel Secretary, given to RFS. January 2004.
Aditional:] The original chapel was built in 1902 and become the school-room to a larger chapel consecrated in 1906 after the 1904/5 Revival. This chapel closed in 2003 and the congregation have returned to the earlier chapel. See in the Notes - compiled for RCAHMW by the Chapel Secretary. Hello
My great great grandparents were married in Kinnerton Chapel in Old Radnor on 21st May1850. I have been searching for information on the Chapel, so was pleased to find this website. I have now located it on Google Street View – looks like someone is ‘doing it up’ to live in: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.2612635,-3.1095337,3a,90y,232.95h,84.26t/data=!3m9!1e1!3m7!1s-8DWPORkq2RFVNXBLde_-g!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!9m2!1b1!2i53?hl=en-GB
The marriage record of my ancestors Abraham Bounds and Elizabeth Williams is attached. I hope it is of interest.
All the best
Saira
